Keeping the Air Conditioning Power Bill Down in Cairns: What Actually Works in the Tropics

Every summer the same conversation happens in Cairns kitchens: the power bill arrives, someone points at the air conditioner, and the unit gets switched off in protest for a week until everyone gives up. There is a better way to run it, and most of it is about how the unit is set rather than how often it is on.

The trouble is that nearly all the advice online was written for Sydney or Melbourne, where the air is dry and the heat comes and goes. Far North Queensland is a different job. Here the unit spends most of its energy pulling water out of the air, not heat, and that changes what actually saves money.

Why the tropics cost more to cool

An air conditioner does two things at once. It moves heat out of the room, and it condenses moisture out of the air so the room feels dry enough to be comfortable. In humid air the second job is the expensive one. When it is 31 degrees and the humidity is sitting in the eighties, a good share of the unit's work is turning airborne water into the trickle you see coming out of the drain pipe outside.

That is also why a house up here can feel sticky at 24 degrees and perfectly fine at 26. The number on the remote matters less than how dry the air is. Once you understand that, the cheapest way to run the unit becomes obvious: aim for dry and moving, not cold.

The settings that do the heavy lifting

  • Set it to 24 or 25, not 19. Every degree lower adds noticeably to the running cost, and in humid air a low set point does not make the room feel much better, it just makes it cold and damp. Most people find 24 to 25 comfortable once the humidity is under control.
  • Use dry mode on muggy evenings. Dry mode runs the compressor gently to keep pulling moisture out without driving the temperature down hard. On a build-up night when the air is thick but not scorching, it is often the most comfortable and the cheapest setting on the remote.
  • Let the ceiling fan do half the job. A fan does not cool the air, it moves it across your skin, which is what makes you feel cooler. A fan running with the air conditioner set a couple of degrees higher is cheaper than the air conditioner alone set low.
  • Leave the fan speed on auto. Forcing the fan to low makes the unit work harder to move the same amount of heat. Auto lets the unit choose, and it is usually right.
  • Close the room off. A split system cools the room it is in. Doors left open to the hallway mean it is trying to cool the whole house through one doorway, and it never gets there.

Stop the heat getting in first

The cheapest kilowatt is the one the unit never has to deal with. Western sun on a bedroom window in the late afternoon puts more heat into that room than the air conditioner can comfortably remove, so the unit runs flat out and the room still feels warm at bedtime. Blinds or curtains closed before the sun hits the glass, not after, make a difference you can feel.

The same goes for the outdoor unit. If it is sitting in full afternoon sun, hemmed in by a fence or buried under a garden bed, it is trying to dump heat into air that is already hot and cannot move. Give it shade if you can and give it room to breathe. Cut back anything growing over it.

The maintenance side, and why it matters more here

A dirty air conditioner is an expensive air conditioner. Once the filters and the coil behind them are coated in dust, the unit cannot move air through itself properly, so it runs longer to reach the same temperature and costs more every hour it is on. In the tropics the coil is wet with condensation most of the time it runs, and dust sticks to a wet surface, so it loads up far faster than a southern service schedule assumes.

Washing the filters monthly through the wet season is a homeowner job and takes ten minutes. The coil itself needs a proper chemical clean by a technician, not a spray and a wipe, and doing it before the wet rather than during it is the sensible order. On the beaches, from Machans Beach and Holloways Beach up through Trinity Beach to Palm Cove, salt on the outdoor coil adds to the problem, and a rinse with fresh water helps.

Anything involving refrigerant is licensed work in Australia, and so is the electrical side. FNQ Air Solutions Pty Ltd holds QBCC licence 15533799 and ARCTick refrigerant handling licence AU62644, both checkable on the public registers.

Is it cheaper to leave it on all day?

Usually not, but it depends on the house. A modern inverter unit sips power once the room is at temperature, so leaving it running at 25 in a well-sealed, well-shaded room can cost less than letting the room bake all day and then hammering it back down at five o'clock. In a leaky, sun-facing room the unit never gets to that easy state, and turning it off while nobody is home is cheaper. If you are not sure which your house is, run it both ways for a week each and read the meter.

When the bill is high and none of this helps

If the unit is set sensibly, the filters are clean and the bill is still climbing, the unit itself is usually the reason. Low refrigerant, a tired compressor, a failing fan motor or a unit that was oversized for the room in the first place all show up as a machine that runs and runs without ever settling down. Those are fault-finding jobs, and the fix is often cheaper than another summer of the bill it is causing.

We service and repair air conditioning across Cairns and the inner suburbs, Stratford, Freshwater, Redlynch and Brinsmead, the full beaches corridor from Machans Beach to Palm Cove, south through Edmonton and Gordonvale, and up the Range to Mareeba and Atherton. Tell us the suburb and what the unit is doing and we will tell you whether it is a setting, a service or a repair.

Common questions

What temperature should I set my air conditioner to in Cairns?
Around 24 to 25 degrees. In humid air the comfort comes from the unit drying the room rather than from a low number on the remote, and every degree below that adds to the running cost without making the room feel much better. Pair it with a ceiling fan and most people are comfortable.
Does dry mode use less power than cool mode?
Often, yes. Dry mode runs the compressor more gently and focuses on removing moisture, so on a muggy but not scorching evening it can keep the room comfortable for less than cool mode set low. On a genuinely hot afternoon cool mode is still the one to use.
Why is my air conditioner running all the time and not cooling?
The common causes are dirty filters or a coated coil, low refrigerant, a failing fan or compressor, or a unit that is too small or too big for the room. Clean the filters first. If it still runs without settling, it needs a technician to find the fault rather than more hours on the meter.
